The biggest star on the planet is sucking his thumb.
“Damn,” Will Smith says on the set of Hancock, trying to shake the pain of a thumbnail that split in two as he was thrown through a mock wall. “All these crazy stunts we’re doing, and this is how I get hurt. I didn’t see that coming.”
Which is strange for Smith, who is nothing if not calculating.
For all the on-screen charisma that has made him a Hollywood ATM, Smith is, at his core, a statistician with social skills. He breaks down the films he’s considering into sub-categories — are there enough special effects, a love story? — to calculate their commercial or Oscar viability. Most Mondays, he pores over box office reports the way sports nuts read box scores, even when he doesn’t have a movie in theaters.
That knack for cinematic algebra makes studios the kind of money once reserved for white men named Tom. Read the rest of this entry…
A-List celebrities like Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Oprah Winfrey descended upon London’s Hyde Park Wednesday for a star-studded dinner as part of a week-long celebration honoring Nelson Mandela.
The former South African president is in London for a series of events to celebrate his 90th birthday, including a big outdoor concert at Hyde Park on Friday — with proceeds benefiting his 46664 charity. The show coincides with the 20th anniversary of London’s Free Mandela concert, which called for his release from prison.
Will Smith’s powers are even more extraordinary than those of a caped crusader who can leap way beyond the tallest buildings in a single bound.
Smith has salvaged many vehicles more threadbare than “Hancock,” and though his latest venture is decidedly uneven, he seems poised to score yet another supervictory at the box office when it opens July 2. The Columbia Pictures release is a good showcase for him — and for co-stars Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman. Imagine the heights they all could have scaled if the picture had been really good. Will Smith attends the dinner in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrating his 90th birthday, at Hyde Park on June 25, 2008 in London, England. The dinner will raise funds for Madiba’s global charity projects, The Nelson Mandela Foundation and 46664.
Will Smith has played Muhammad Ali, a man in black keeping the world safe from alien invaders, the last person on Earth and, in his new movie “Hancock,” a boozy superhero with image problems.
But is the king of the Fourth of July opening ready for the biggest role of his career: Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama? In a word, yes.
“It’s right here,” Smith said, holding up his legendarily prominent ears, which are not unlike Obama’s lobes. “That’s the key. That’s the key. America loves ears, you know? Mickey Mouse started it; Goofy and Dumbo followed behind. And America just loves the ears.” Read the rest of this entry…
More stills from ‘Hancock’ have surfaced and I just uploaded them to the gallery. Nothing that we haven’t already seen in the trailers and clips but still nice!
Since 1776, the Fourth of July has meant three things: barbecues, three-day weekends, and inexplicably enormous box-office receipts for Will Smith sci-fi vehicles of varying quality. Over the years, Smith’s Independence Day–related bankability has proven so infallible that Columbia Pictures probably didn’t think twice about giving the go-ahead for Hancock — his new presumed blockbuster (budgeted at $150 million) about a drunk superhero who gets saved by a kindly publicist — as long as director Peter Berg could have it ready for release next weekend. Could this inane decision really have been as stupid as it sounds? Maybe! The first reviews for Hancock are in, and they’re not very good! Read the rest of this entry…

Pinkett Smith has begged the 39-year-old to take a break when he ends his world tour promoting new movie Hancock.
He says, “I’ve been working a lot the last couple of years. My wife has said we have to take the next five months off. I enjoy my job, I really enjoy working.

Will Smith gatecrashed his Hancock co-star Charlize Therons interview after hearing the actress had been lying about him on camera.
The actor had already spoken to a reporter as part of a segment for U.S. TV show Extra show and Theron was talking about her role as Smiths sidekick - when he barged in.
Reporter A.J. Calloway confirmed to Smith that Theron was boasting she was fitter than the Ali star.
The actress is said to have confided: “He (Smith) was incredibly scared because I am so ripped.” Read the rest of this entry…
Box office champ Will Smith has become as synonymous with the Fourth of July as fireworks and backyard barbecues — but the star says he takes nothing for granted as he opens yet another summer holiday blockbuster with his new action film, “Hancock.”
“I feel like I have a relationship with the audience,” Smith told Matt Lauer on the TODAY set, winding his way through a cheering throng of fans. “They agree they are going to go in droves, and I agree that every time they go, it’s going to be better than the last time.”
