Will Smith has been experimenting with the bittersweet side of life in his last few films. A down-on-his-luck and out-of-work father (“The Pursuit of Happyness”), a man faced with the end of the world (“I Am Legend”) and an alcoholic superhero trying to get his life back on track (“Hancock”). Not exactly the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. This month Smith takes on another somber role in the film “Seven Pounds,” where he plays a man desperate for redemption after he makes one tragic mistake that ruins the lives of seven people. The film also stars Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson and Connor Cruise, the son of his good friend Tom Cruise (and Nicole Kidman). Smith talked to NEWSWEEK’s Allison Samuels.

Will Smith holds up his declaration from Mayor Frank Jackson declaring it Will Smith day during a red carpet event in the Cinemark Valley View 24 Thursday, November 20, 2008. The movie is “Seven Pounds” and Smith made several local appearances Thursday.
Will Smith put in a good 12-hour day in Greater Cleveland Thursday. In the midst of a five-city tour promoting his new film, “Seven Pounds,” Smith was greeted by an array of hugs, handshakes, cell-phone snappers, and “you’re-really-an-inspiration” moments from starstruck fans.
“We’ve never done it this way before, we usually only do New York and L.A.,” said Smith. “This is more like the old school music tours. Different clubs, different cities, meeting people. You get in touch with what people are feeling and thinking and it’s much more personal when you’re actually out shaking hands.”
I finally got my hands on over 40 HQ photos of Will and Trey’s mom at Trey’s football game on October 25th. If you post these photos elsewhere, please give credit. I’ve been searching for these for ever.
Having a major motion picture star walk the red carpet to promote a movie is nothing new. It’s a remarkably refreshing change of pace when such an A-list actor appears on the red carpet with a different motive. Sure, mega-star Will Smith was clearly promoting his new film, “Seven Pounds,” when he appeared at Cinemark Valley View in Cleveland, Ohio. After all, he arrived in a bus that had his face and the film’s name prominently displayed on the side. Yet, upon his arrival, Smith participated in a special presentation in which he made a donation of 200 turkeys to the Cleveland Food Bank. Earlier in the day, Smith met with local school children, as well as with children in a nearby hospital.
“As you all know, it’s a tough time for a lot of people in our country right now,” Smith told the crowd gathered for the “Seven Pounds” premiere. “I just thought this would be a fantastic opportunity to go out, see a movie, have a good time, but also help people.” (more…)
The Cinemark in Valley View hosted a red carpet movie screening of Will Smith’s newest film Thursday.
The film, entitled Seven Pounds, is Smith’s latest project with The Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino.
“This film has a lot of the same emotional depth [as The Pursuit of Happyness],” Smith said. “This film is a touch more complex. I think Gabriele has really expanded as an artist.”
The movie is a drama featuring Will Smith as an IRS agent with a terrible secret about his past, who sets out to help seven strangers in desperate need. Help is only awarded to those who are truly deserving – to those Smith’s character considers good people after careful (and, by some standards, odd) observation. (more…)
Will Smith shines in the off-beat superhero tale “Hancock” (Sony, 2008, $39.95), which tops the list of titles arriving on Blu-ray this week.
Smith plays the title character John Hancock, who possesses super powers but seemingly spends most of his time wallowing in depression and drowning himself in booze. Even when tanked up, he can still fly to the scene of a crime in progress and foil it.

The only problem is that while fighting the bad guys in his surly state, he leaves millions of dollars in damages behind. (more…)
