Will Smith’s July 4 victor “Hancock” fell more than 50 percent in its second week at the box office, losing its No. 1 spot to “Hell Boy II: The Golden Army.”
The demon spawn superhero took in $35.9 million compared to the demi-god superhero (“Hancock”), which had a $33 million weekend, CinemaBlend.com reports.
Another major opener “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” starring an aging Brendan Fraser, debuted in third with $20.6 million.
The big – and expected – disappointment was Eddie Murphy’s “Meet Dave.” You know, Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in “Meet Dave.”
The film bombed – big time. It came in sixth, earning a measly $5.3 million. According to media reports, Murphy didn’t even show up for the premiere of the film. And if the star doesn’t want to see his movie, why should his fans?
Still, this wasn’t the worst showing for Murphy at the box office, who has made some whoppers of movies, including “Bowfinger.” The 2002 film “The Adventures of Pluto Nash” grossed an astonishing $2.18 million in its opening weekend, BoxOfficeMojo.com reports. Its worldwide gross was $7.1 million.
At least “Meet Dave” will surpass that … maybe.
